Ed Plant, a native Californian grew up in San Diego. In 1969 Ed purchased his first company, off 8th & Imperial Avenues in Downtown where today, Petco Park is home to the San Diego Padres. Ed’s son, Frank, has worked with Ed since 1979. In 1981 Ed bought the large refrigerated warehouse, across the street from his insulation supply business that came to be San Diego Refrigerated Services (SDRS). In 1996, Ed purchased Union Ice cold storage facility on port tidelands in National City that is now San Diego Cold, a commercial cold storage. Frank operated Harborside, the Port’s cold storage at Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal since 1997. SDRS expanded to Harborside in 2000. Harborside has done business with Central and South America, Australia, the Near East; and is a hub for San Diego’s growing breweries, local produce markets and neighboring wineries. Ed Plant’s vigilant efforts to save waterfront businesses and jobs earned him the title as first Chairman of the Working Waterfront Group in 2004. He has served as a SD Food Bank Director; on the Economic Development Committee for the National City Chamber; past Chairman and currently on the Executive Board of the SD Port Tenants Assn; lifetime member of the SD Bowl Games Assn, and on the Board for the San Diego Chamber. Ed is proud grandfather to Hunter, Molly, Jackie, and Charlotte. He enjoys his sailboat and plays golf. Monthly he escapes to the family’s home in Mammoth for some quiet time and fishing.
