Councilmember Jennifer Campbell

City of San Diego - District 2

Sacramento Delegation Attendee 2020

Dr. Jennifer Campbell grew up ready to help people. Raised in a working-class family – her father, a union machinist, and her mother, a secretary and community volunteer – Jen learned at a young age the value of citizen involvement in our democracy and how government affects people’s daily lives. She attended public schools and studied history at George Washington University, where she became involved in the civil rights movement, marching with Martin Luther King Jr. and against the Vietnam War. This activist sense of duty and dedication to helping those in need inspired her to return to school to become a doctor. While women had little opportunity to pursue medicine, Jen was accepted to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School on her merits. In her first year, she became a single mother, but carried on with her education, raised her children, earned her medical degree, and completed her residency in the specialty of Family Medicine. Dr. Jen practiced and taught for 37 years. Since moving to San Diego 13 years ago, Dr. Jen has been an active member of the community and regularly attends neighborhood meetings. She has served on the executive boards of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation, Clairemont Town Council, and San Diego County Democratic Party’s Central Committee. Dr. Jen and her partner, Suzanne, live in the Bay Ho neighborhood of San Diego.
