SDSU “Downtown” ft the SDSU Symphony Orchestra, SDSU Wind Symphony and the Aztec Concert Choir

April 15, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Event Navigation

San Diego State’s top orchestral and premier wind group join forces with the nearly 100-voice concert choir, to present an evening unlike any other for music-goers in San Diego. Featuring more than 250 musicians this mega-concert performance is aptly named, Downtown. The music performance will take place in the historic and iconic Copley Symphony Hall inside the Jacobs Music Center, the home of the San Diego Symphony.

Performing the works of Wagner, Vaughan Williams, and Beethoven, the music program called a “powerhouse” by Jim Chute of UT San Diego, will culminate in the glorious “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Attendees can expect the complete SDSU experience at the concert; guests will be welcomed to the Jacobs Music Center by the SDSU Marching Band.

Additionally, with donor support the School of Music and Dance has provided 300 tickets to local 7th-12th grade students in area music programs. Through the School’s music education program, which prepares SDSU students for careers as music teachers in K-12 classrooms, many of these school-aged children learn music from the performers in the concert.

SDSU music education students work as fellows in K-12 classrooms for 6-8 hours per week for an entire academic year. Nearly 65% of all music teachers in San Diego County are SDSU music education alumni. Together, they impact for than 10,000 K-12 students each year.

Proceeds from the Friday, April 15 concert will support San Diego Symphony/SDSU scholarships for students in the music education program at SDSU. Tickets are available online starting at $15.
