Title 42 expired Thursday, May 11. A holdover policy implemented by the Trump administration, Title 42 allowed U.S. officials to turn away migrants who came to the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum on the grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19.
As Title 42 restrictions are lifted, the Biden administration has put a series of new policies into place to prevent illegal crossings, including those of smuggling operations. As part of these new policies, those seeking asylum in the U.S. must schedule an appointment through the CBP One smartphone app – though many report bugs and errors. The Biden administration has also set a limit on the number of migrants allowed to seek asylum.
