Chamber Champions at the Capitol

Veto Efforts

With the State’s legislative session nearing an end, Governor Newsom has until September 30th to sign or veto all Assembly and Senate bills. Three priority bills that the Chamber has opposed have passed the state legislature and are at the Governor’s desk: SB 1103, SB 1047, and AB 98. The Chamber has sent letters to the Governor urging him to veto these three bills considering their very-possible negative consequences for our state, regional and binational economy. SB 1103 would create restrictive commercial leasing regulations for property owners and tenants, SB 1047 would highly regulate AI development without federal guidance, and AB 98 would create a burdensome “one-size-fits-all” regulatory framework for warehouse location and trucking routes at the state level without considering local factors.

Prop 36

The Chamber has continued to advocate for Proposition 36, the November ballot measure that would amend 2014’s Proposition 47 and provide needed sentencing reform for retail theft crimes as well as enhanced pathways to treatment and rehabilitation for offenders. The Chamber co-hosted an educational workshop on the Proposition on September 18th in partnership with District Attorney Stephan, Mayor Gloria, the Downtown San Diego Partnership, and the Gaslamp Quarter Association. The workshop was an opportunity for the community to discuss why Prop 36 is important for San Diego and our binational region specifically. Chamber Executive Director of Public Affairs, Justine Murray, gave a presentation about the business community’s view on the need for the Proposition.
