Since 2018, Dr. de la Torre has embraced SDSU as an opportunity for barrier-breaking and has advanced its unique status as a high research-activity, community-engaged, border-connected, and richly diverse Hispanic Serving Institution. As an economist, President de la Torre is driving SDSU’s focus on educational excellence, job creation, industry expansion and new, innovative research. One of the most visible examples of this is SDSU Mission Valley, which has already created high-demand, skilled jobs for 6,000 workers. At full capacity, it will also add $3 billion in annual economic growth, expanding the $5.67 billion SDSU already contributes to the economy. Because of de la Torre’s leadership, San Diego State University and the San Diego region are better positioned for multi-generational economic development and expansion in ways that will significantly benefit our diverse community and economy.
