Partnerships With Industry (PWI), founded in 1985, provides adults with disabilities the training, placement, and on-the-job support they need to become successfully employed. Led by Mark Berger, President / CEO, PWI employs a staff of over 110 individuals who are dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities to succeed in the workplace and pursue their vocational aspirations. Since opening its doors 31 years ago, PWI has assisted over 12,500 adults with disabilities find employment in San Diego County.
PWI’s mission is to successfully create win-win partnerships between San Diego County businesses and adults with disabilities who want to work. PWI clients have a wide range of intellectual, developmental and/or other disabilities, including but not limited to: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, visual and/or hearing impairments, physical disabilities, and mental illness. PWI on the premise that every adult with a disability, who is willing to work, has the ABILITY to be an active part of the workforce and society. Each year, 1100 of these hardworking, dedicated, and passionate individuals receive the training, placement, and on-the-job support they need to be successful in the workplace.
An essential part of PWI’s success is its many business partners. Over 230 local businesses hire the adults with disabilities served by PWI. These partners range from small businesses like Le Caramel and Utomic, to educational organizations like UC San Diego and Southwestern College, to giant technology companies like Qualcomm and Genentech. No matter the type or size of the business, all 230 have one thing in common; they see value in hiring adults with disabilities and are actively encouraging this population to unleash their potential and maximize their independence.
Every day PWI opens the door for individuals with disabilities to find meaningful employment and prove to themselves and their loved ones that they are capable of not only becoming employed, but also excelling in a work environment. Ultimately, PWI empowers adults with disabilities to pursue their vocational aspirations and move toward maximum independence.
