The San Diego City Council met on Monday, June 22, to discuss the results of Phase 2 of the City Municipalization Feasibility Study. The Study determined it is financially feasible for the City to move forward with municipalizing the electric grid and purchasing electric infrastructure and assets from SDG&E. Chamber staff spoke in opposition to moving forward with municipalization efforts when the study results were presented at the City’s Environment Committee and the City’s Climate Advisory Board due to the current state of the City’s finances and the enormous risk that municipalization presents to businesses.
The Union-Tribune recently published an op-ed by the Chamber outlining our opposition to moving ahead with municipalization. Municipalization would cost the City billions at a time when they are facing a large budget deficit. It also would shift electric maintenance and operations away from utility professionals and to elected officials.
