Organized retail crime has risen to the level of a national crisis, impacting both large retailers and small businesses alike, and traumatizing store employees and shoppers. This crime is perpetrated by large, sophisticated criminal rings, who hoard and warehouse stolen goods, passing them off as legitimate merchandise and selling them online. To steal these goods, these groups often use violent, aggressive tactics which leave a traumatic effect on the mental and emotional health of employees, store owners, and customers.
Addressing the problem of organized retail crime requires a coordinated “all-hands-on-deck” effort leveraging resources at the federal, state, and local levels. Bringing business leaders and local officials together to dialogue and share positive policy solutions will help us curb this rising problem.
