Securing a Multiple Re-Entry Maritime Border Permit

A multiple re-entry maritime border permit would greatly benefit the cross border maritime travel by allowing ease of access to the traveler and sustainability of the U.S. and Mexican travel industry, ensuring a successful cross-border business model.

The Port of San Diego has been working collaboratively with the Sportfishing Association of California and National Immigration Institute of Mexico, on cross-border permits since 2012. In November 2013, the U.S. and Mexico successfully launched a cross-border maritime permit consistent to the established land-border permit. The adopted electronic permitting solution yields to best practices in the industry, and allows for compliance and enforcement. A multiple re-entry permit was discussed on the last Chamber trip to Mexico City and the multiple re-entry permit would greatly benefit the cross border maritime travel making the topic worthy of revisiting.

Through its advocacy efforts, the Chamber has:

  • Established a multiple cross-border maritime permit in order to allow for the sustainability of the U.S. and Mexican travel industry ensuring a successful cross-border business model.
  • Recommended proposal of a one-year multiple re-entry data portal complemented by the determined affordability of a permit to the traveler.
  • Recommended proposal of a one-year multiple re-entry online data portal complemented by the determined affordability of a permit to the traveler, and/or to provide the traveler the ability to purchase the annual pass from a Mexican Consulate office approximate to the border region.
