A Shared Commitment: Advancing Infrastructure to Mitigate Transboundary Pollution

San Diego and Tijuana share more than an international border. Cultures, workforces, businesses, communities, and the environment are just a few of the commonalities shared between the two cities. When it comes to the environment, borders are irrelevant.

For decades, the shared watershed has been top environmental concern on both sides of the border. Here, untreated sewage from Tijuana’s neighborhoods has flowed downstream to regional beaches, as inadequate infrastructure has failed to capture and treat wastewater. This has led to over 1,000 days of beach closures, negatively impacting tourism, local businesses, and public health.

Thanks to continual advocacy from partners across the Cali-Baja region, significant progress is being made. Concrete solutions have been outlined by the North American Development Bank (NADBank) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifying wastewater treatment, pollution, and water conservation infrastructure projects that will help mitigate pollution and reduce transboundary flows.

Join us on March 13, for a virtual meeting and celebration of  the near completion of the San Antonio de los Buenos Treatment Plant and the positive impact it will have on our region’s economic prosperity. The conversation will feature Kurt Honold, Secretary of Economic Development and Innovation at the State of Baja California, who will share details about the state’s investment and collaboration with the Mexican Federal Government to continue to address transboundary pollution impacting our region.
