2nd Chamber Tech Series on Smart Cities

On June 19, the Chamber hosted the second installment of the 2018 Chamber Tech Series by Deloitte. The focus was around smart cities, smart bases, and connected government. Members engaged in a lively discussion with national and local experts about how those interactive tools impact the way we plan our cities’ futures, their long-term capabilities, and the role private businesses play in those innovations. Common themes for building a smart city included focusing on sustainability, responding to citizens’ needs quickly, and housing as interconnected with mobility.

Congressional Luncheon Covers Hot Topics

The Chamber hosted San Diego Representatives Susan Davis, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas, and Darrell Issa at the annual Congressional Luncheon on June 29th moderated by QUALCOMM’s Monique Rodriquez, Senior Director of Government Affairs. While offering differing views on NAFTA, immigration, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure, the Congressmembers all stressed the importance of bipartisan solutions and working together to shape the future. Notably, audience members were asked what was most important in regards to immigration via a live poll and an overwhelming amount said finding a permanent solution for Dreamers.

Signatures Submitted for Yes! For a Better San Diego Campaign

On Monday July 9th the Yes! For a Better San Diego campaign submitted over 114,000 voter signatures in support of the citizen’s initiative to expand the Convention Center. The volunteer efforts from the Call to Action sent to Chamber members contributed to these efforts in the last two weeks. Jerry Sanders attended the announcement held at the Registrar of Voters office and was joined by Father Joe Carroll, business leaders, and tourism industry workers to submit the signatures to qualify for the November ballot. The opportunity to pave thousands of miles of road, create quality, permanent jobs and tackle the homelessness crisis is rare, so this may be the most important decision San Diegans will make to for America’s Finest City for decades to come.
