A Turning Point

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES

Our country has been under siege from a pandemic. More than 100,000 people have died – with African-American and LatinX communities bearing the brunt of these losses. Millions in our country are unemployed. Here in San Diego, unemployment is at nearly 30 percent.

With the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and the protests that have risen up in cities across our country, the pain and frustration of so many people for so many years has reached a boiling point.

It is forcing some long-overdue reckoning when it comes to policing practices, systemic racism, and white supremacy.

It feels like our country is unraveling. It also feels like an opportunity. Could this be a turning point?

Join Elizabeth Fitzsimons of LEAD San Diego, Steven Jones, Ph.D. of JONES, and Starla Lewis, Mesa College Professor Emeritus and transformational speaker, to talk about what’s going on, and how we as leaders of teams, organizations, and families can step up and be part of the change our country needs.

This is the seventh webinar in our series, Leading in a New Reality. Watch the first six episodes below.

All Our Talent: Women on Boards & Commissions Landscape Launch

Presented by San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation in partnership with SDG&E

Making the San Diego region the best place to live and work means ensuring our workforce has what it needs to be successful. An important part of that is looking at who is leading our companies and organizations and making sure our leadership is diverse and gender-balanced.

It’s why we have created the All Our Talent: Women on Boards and Commissions initiative, an effort of the San Diego Regional Chamber Foundation with support from Mine The Gap, focused on addressing the need for more women on corporate, nonprofit, and government boards in our region. An effort that is especially critical in these trying times when resiliency and innovation are paramount.

Join us on Tuesday, June 23 for the launch of this important initiative. Joining us as special guests and featured speakers are First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis.

During this event, we’ll release the findings of our landscape analysis on the state of women on boards and commissions locally and discuss the disparities and barriers in our region’s leadership. This will give us a clear picture of where we stand, so we know where we can make the most impact. Your participation and support is key to the success of this initiative and to our region leading the way on gender balance and inclusivity.

Ask The Experts

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES

Last week we heard from Steven Jones and Starla Lewis, two leaders and teachers who helped us process this moment in our country and how we can take action. Dr. Jones and Professor Lewis will be back on Wednesday to answer your questions on racism in America in a special “Ask the Experts” session, driven solely by audience questions.

Whether you don’t fully understand the dimensions of what is happening and don’t know what to say or do, or you want guidance on how to discuss your experience with friends and colleagues, this session is for you. All questions are welcome in this conversation.

Raising Our Kids to Raise Questions

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES

Our kids are growing up in a rapidly changing time. How we approach tough subjects like racism with them at early ages will shape the way they view the world and the leaders they grow up to be. LEAD and partner JONES are bringing together local leaders Dr. Aisha Taylor and Chida Rebecca for a conversation about how we talk about race and being anti-racist with young people, as well as how to evolve the discussions as they grow.

We’re hearing the terms “white privilege” and “anti-racist” frequently these days, but what do they really mean? And, how do you become “anti-racist”? Building Inclusion & Anti-Racism as a Core Part of Our New Normal

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES

COVID-19 has forced us to pause and reexamine how our economy, organizations, and systems will function and serve us best for the future. As businesses and schools look at strategies for reopening, a core element of those plans should be inclusion. Building systems that are more reflective of our diverse communities is essential to ensuring we move closer to equality at all levels. LEAD and partner JONES are bringing together local leaders Dr. Steven Jones, Dr. Lida Rafia, Dr. Damien Robinson, and Andrew Simmerman.
