Webinar Series: Leading in a New Reality

Understanding Police Reform

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES

Since the police killing of George Floyd – and the killing of Breonna Taylor – two cases in a lengthy history of police killing unarmed Black men and women – there have been protests and a movement for reform to policing practices. LEAD and partner JONES are bringing together local leaders, Councilmember Monica Montgomery, Joshua Chanin, and Jerry Sanders. The discussion will break things down into a deeper understanding of the police reform movement, and discuss ways we can be involved.

Voting in the Time of COVID &
Black Lives Matter

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES and ABC 10News

If you watched the Democratic National Convention, you heard the repeated pleas to vote. Nearly every speaker implored viewers to make their voices heard by voting. Michelle Obama even wore a necklace with her wishes spelled out: V-O-T-E.

In the news media, voting by mail – and the Post Office’s fate – has dominated headlines. In such a high stakes election, local elections officials and community leaders are already in high gear.

In this week’s webinar, we’re talking about what it takes to get people to vote, how we ensure a safe and secure election, and how we remove barriers to voting – all against the backdrop of COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Our featured speakers this week include Griselda Ramirez, Michael Vu, and Laila Aziz, and the conversation will be moderated by LEAD Vice President Elizabeth Fitzsimons.

Distance Learning & The Education Gap

Presented by LEAD San Diego in partnership with JONES and ABC 10News

We are about one month into the new school year. Some schools in our region have reopened and some have continued distance learning. How has this shift to new educational norms affected our students and their families? We know the education gap is growing, and so is the opportunity gap. What are the long-term effects of this situation on children — and how can we as leaders of teams and families address those growing gaps?

Our featured speakers this week include pediatrician Dr. Camille Robinson, and Superintendent Dr. David Miyashiro, and the conversation will be moderated by LEAD Vice President Elizabeth Fitzsimons.

Featured Speaker

Steph Johnson
Executive Director, Creative Director
Voices of Our City Choir

In 2016, Johnson started a choir for people experiencing homelessness with Nina Deering. Today, the Voices of Our City Choir has swelled to 225 members and helped over 60 of its members get off the street and into housing. Johnson became a spokesperson and the choir became a symbol of what a grassroots effort can accomplish. Johnson and members of her staff sit on local homeless committees and boards, and advise the city council and the mayor’s office on issues.

In addition to advocacy, Voices of Our City is an inspirational musical ensemble that has garnered plenty of headlines. The choir has been the focus of a documentary that aired nationally on PBS stations. The group has performed with the San Diego Symphony and opened a benefit concert at the historic Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on a bill that featured Jason Mraz and founding members of the Doors. Most recently the choir auditioned for Season 15 of America’s Got Talent.

Steph Johnson turned the choir into a nonprofit and serves as both Executive Director and Creative Director.
